Medical Personality

Most awaited blog of New Year among readers!

A)WHAT IS IT…HOW DOES IT BENEFIT ME?

All of you must have fancied if there a way not to fall sick, avoid going to the doctor every other day!

Medical Personality can help you achieve this dream of yours!!

It can help you in becoming in charge of your health. If applied accurately, it can help you prevent diseases, effectively manage the existing ones, prevent their exacerbation and live a healthier life.

Medical Personality is a reference scale to measure whether an individual belongs to Vata, Pitta or Kapha factors/doshas (described in the next section) or any two predominantly. On a 10 point chart you evaluate yourself.

This evaluation determines an individual’s physical, mental, behavioral characteristics along with the type of diseases one is prone to. This is discussed in detail in the later part of the blog.

Medical Personality evaluation for a physician is like a compass to the sailor for it determines the direction of sail.

It is extremely significant in proper diet and lifestyle guidance for a healthy life, along with patient specific disease management.

It is a guiding light to giving tailor made treatment to an individual as no two subjects generally have exactly same medical personality.

B) COMPONENTS OF MEDICAL PERSONALITY:

In Ayurveda below mentioned three main factors or doshas (as mentioned in the texts) form the stalwarts of health:

  1. Vata
  2. Pitta
  3. Kapha

Instead of describing them in detail we will understand about them with working wisdom.

Vata can be understood as the energy which brings about activation and motion in the body, external or internal.

It can be your heart beating, nerves conducting or peristalsis in the intestine.

Balanced vata means a balance of all such activities.

It is also responsible for destruction. Vata surge is associated with ageing

Vata predominant individuals are prone to diseases of nervous and immune system.

Pitta can be understood as the energy released in various chemical reactions in the body. Usually associated with heat, digestive fire, glowing skin, gleaming eyes.It is also related with intelligence and intellect.

These are the seats of pitta.

Pitta type individuals are prone to diseases of blood and hormones.

Kapha can be understood as the energy responsible for imparting good strength and immunity to the body.

Kapha predominant individuals are prone to problems with digestion especially in old age.

These three factors co-existing and co-operating harmoniously in the body, bring about a state of good health. Any imbalance, if not taken care of, is Disease.

C) LET’S UNDERSTAND IN DETAIL..

We begin with an example:

Say if a person’s traits match to 7 vata points , 2 pitta and 1 kapha point then he will be endowed with being 70 % vata dominating ,  20 % pitta and 10 % kapha dominating.

(On a scale of 10 to 100% each point match means 10 % score)

This forms the basis of all your diet-lifestyle advice and disease management

Quote it as you quote for example your blood levels

eg: I have an Hb (Haemoglobin) 13

you should say

I am :

Vat 70 %

Pitta 20 %

Kapha 10 %

Now evaluate yourself as per the 10 point chart illustrated below.

The three factors/doshas of Medical Personality also have mental attributes to be discussed in subsequent blogs.

F) PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF MEDICAL PERSONALITY CHART..

In the picture above the graph shows number of diseases that each factor/dosha is linked to.

The diseases caused by vata dosha are 80 in number (Maximum)

Ones linked to pitta dosha are 40 in number

The diseases linked to kapha dosha are 20 in number (Minimum)

The inference we can draw from the above information is that as we slide from vata to kapha, health probability improves and disease probability declines.

The pie chart above is a depiction of an example:

Suppose a person’s medical personality comes out to be:

50% Vata, 40% Pitta and 10% Kapha then he is susceptible to 50% share of diseases caused by Vata, 40% of the diseases caused by Pitta and 10% kapha related diseases.

The probability of diseases caused by vata is maximum, it has 80 diseases to its share!

This hypothetical subject has to be very careful his with and lifestyle regime owing to high disease probability.

Inference: If we analyze our Medical Personality accurately, then it can help us in taking such diet and maintain such a lifestyle, with which we can prevent diseases and live our lives in a more healthier way thus paving way to Health Sustainability.
